Job Description

Purpose

We are seeking a talented technical lead to design upstream and downstream processes to produce recombinant proteins from the bench to the bedside. As a Lead Scientist, the candidate will contribute to a scientific team as a subject matter expert in recombinant protein expression and purification, with

preference for membrane protein purification, working in the laboratory, within project teams, and across functions.

Candidate must have a broad working knowledge of protein structure, expression system with a preferred focus yeast and procaryotes, purification process and be able to apply that knowledge independently and creatively toward the development of novel protocols and advance rational designs to develop, improve, upscale and commercially launch new drug substance candidates. Successful candidate will help drive the scientific and technical strategy for multiple programs. Candidate will have exceptional ability to design, execute, analyse and troubleshoot complex experiments and train junior scientists. Individual must be a self-starter, strategic thinker, possess ability to work in a matrix organization and to change direction and methods if required.

As a member of the GSK MSAT Process Science team, the Process Development Lead will be expected to invent, develop, optimize, and conduct bench/pilot scale processes for HBV fermentation and purification platforms.

Work closely with team members within GSK and Contract Manufacturing Organisations to assist with the development, validation, and technology transfer of manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

Expectation to be present 60 % in the laboratory completing experimental work, 20% designing experiments, bibliography, writing high quality protocol and reports, 20 % team management

Researching new technologies

Developing different approaches to manufacturing processes

Implementing new technologies and approaches to develop new products, improve efficiency and scale up the production of vaccines

Testing and assessing the production process to ensure high quality is maintained through research, development and commercial production

Apply your scientific expertise to provide innovative approaches for production of high-quality purified proteins across diverse protein classes

Independently propose, design, develop and oversee execution of studies to enable high quality analysis of vaccine responses and train others as required

Provide scientific leadership in the team to develop and evaluate workflows for expression of recombinant protein in prokaryotic and yeast cells as well as purification of this recombinant protein including characterization activities

Oversee and participate in lab work to support research studies: develop design, experimental plans, hypotheses, evaluate and interpret data, write reports, present results

Support protein sciences team by exploring new technologies, contributing to annual budgets and strategies, and maintaining modern instrumentation in the laboratory

Apply subject matter expertise to innovate and drive protein purification strategies and assisting with team resource management to support our pipeline of drug discovery projects.

Contribute to project team meetings by communicating experimental results and advising on best methods to improve downstream applications

Lead tech transfer of technical methodologies to other sites and/or cross-functional internal or external groups as required

Bring forth new ideas, techniques, and technology to ensure that the group remains at the forefront of the innovation in the field to best serve the projects

Participate in timeline planning and decision-making regarding research priorities and provide information on feasibility of prospective projects

Present findings to the teams, management, and multidisciplinary groups internally and externally to the collaborators and at the conferences

Grow in the role to mentor direct reports, developing their expertise in experimental design and execution as well as guiding professional development.

Development, optimisation, and characterisation of upstream and down-stream processes for recombinant antigen to support the manufacture of seed stocks, drug substance and drug product to support CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control) activities

Skills, Knowledge & Experiences

PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysics or Molecular & cellular Biology (or related discipline), postdoctoral experience, M.Sc. with 8+ years of relevant experience. Additional experience in pharma industry is a plus

Ability to demonstrate leadership and success guiding expression and purification of recombinant protein methodologies from concept phase through commercial implementation

Extensive use AKTA purification platform and current knowledge of purification methods and protocols.

Expertise in generating challenging proteins, with preference for membrane protein purification.

Expertise in scale-up of upstream and downstream biopharma operation Expertise in developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting protein purification strategy for increasing purity and yield.

Experience working in a matrix environment and supporting one or more projects simultaneously

Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize work and to drive project activities forward

Excellent organization and planning skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as part of a team, strong motivation with a dedicated work ethic

Vast expertise in protein purification with record of scientific achievement (strong publication and/or patent, IND filing record)

Sound judgement, excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to provide recommendations around complex scientific results

Compliance with all safety training and good research laboratory practice

Experience working in Pharma, biotech industry

Experience in handling genetically modified organisms

Knowledge and understanding of purification techniques

Understanding principles of Design of Experiment and relevant software.
