Job Description


UWCSEA has a vacancy for August 2024 at its East Campus for a Primary School Mathematics Coach.

UWCSEA Primary School is committed to providing a rigorous, balanced Mathematics curriculum in which all students learn and deepen their understanding. Our bespoke curriculum has been developed using the principles of Concept Based Teaching and Learning, with an interdisciplinary lens. The Mathematics Coach is part of a team of Primary School Coaches that engage with students, teachers, leadership and parents to improve the learning of our students. This is a dual role as they also lead on the Mathematics curriculum.

The coach works alongside teachers, providing support through one to one coaching cycles in classrooms, modelling lessons, small team planning and reflection and whole staff professional learning. The coach, in partnership with teachers and leaders, collects, analyses and interprets data for the purpose of guiding pedagogical decisions. They will also have a teaching commitment. They are responsible for offering parent information sessions and workshops to support and deepen understanding of a balanced Mathematics framework; emphasising the skills, qualities and behaviours of an effective Mathematics thinker.

Main Responsibilities

Leading the Learning

  • Work with the Primary Leadership Team to lead Mathematics learning in the Primary School.
  • Support teachers in authentic integration of Mathematics into interdisciplinary learning.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships that foster a culture of collaboration.
  • Use a variety of coaching models to respond to teachers\xe2\x80\x99 professional development.
  • Support teachers in their understanding and facilitation of the components of an effective conceptual Mathematics lesson.
  • Assist teachers to examine and respond to evidence of student learning using formative and summative assessments.
  • Lead teams in planning and reflecting on learning that aligns to the College Curriculum.
  • Recommend resources that support student and teacher learning, and provide relevant training.
  • Collaborate with teams (Grade level, Coaches, K12, Leadership) to ensure vertical and horizontal articulation of curriculum and pedagogy.
Professional Learning
  • Strengthen knowledge, skills and understandings in Mathematics content and pedagogy.
  • Support the development of knowledge, skills and understandings in the craft of coaching.
  • Maintain and promote the use of professional resources which reflect current research and responsive practice in Mathematics.
  • Provide professional learning for teachers, teaching assistants, leaders and parents.
  • Identify, coordinate/liaise with suitable consultants to provide ongoing professional learning for staff.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to professional learning communities consisting of other coaches, teachers and leaders.

Person Specifications
  • A relevant degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected - B.Ed or equivalent degree/qualification in Primary (K-5) education
  • Pedagogical coaching experience is essential
  • Teacher leadership is desirable
  • A passion for Mathematics education and an understanding of how students develop their learning in this area
  • Experience of a concept based curriculum would be advantageous.
  • Flexibility of approach and a collaborative style are essential.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to develop trusting relationships with a diverse population
  • Minimum of five years Primary school teaching experience (4-11 year olds)
  • Experience teaching students who are English language learners.
  • Experience in using technology to support and enhance the teaching and learning of Mathematics (ideally, but not essentially, with Apple and Google Suite products)
  • A history of ongoing personal professional learning experiences
  • Experience in leading training and/or supporting teachers\xe2\x80\x99 professional learning
  • Teachers are expected to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academic; Personal & Social Education; Service; Activities; Outdoor Education.
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Development, both that which is mandated by the College and that which is identified by the teacher.
  • On average the College expects a year round, weekly contribution to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for Outdoor education trips during holidays.
