James Cook University Singapore has recently established a Research Institute. The first pillar of the Research Institute will be in the area of aquaculture.

James Cook University is internationally acclaimed for their industry-linked research in tropical aquaculture. The University intends to establish a strong R&D capability in Singapore that will work in close partnership with industry and other end-users to facilitate aquaculture production. The Institute will strongly link with industry, NGOs, Polytechnics/Universities, government and funding bodies to enhance Singaporean aquaculture production and train the future human capital necessary for sustainable industry growth. We are now seeking one qualified and motivated candidates for the positions of: Research Research Assistant.

The Research Assistant provides technical support to our aquaculture nutrition projects.

Responsibilities

  • Support research staff in all practical aspects of the projects
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within the project team, the industry partner, other research collaboration agencies, and across the University.
  • Provide significant input toward the planning of time and resources to reach project objectives
  • Manage feeding trials on campus and at marine aquaculture centre on St. John\'s island
- Ensure accurate record keeping, data and sample integrity.

- Maintains facilities and animals kept within them to satisfy ethical, biosecurity and practical standards that fulfill Singapore NACLAR requirements and University-wide ethics standards.

- Co-ordinate all requirements for maintaining the aquatic facilities used by the project.

- May require occasional overnight stays at the Marine Aquaculture Centre on St. John\'s island, and availability to work weekends when needed.
  • Collection, storage and preliminary analysis of expert data
- Collect and maintain fish tissue samples and records, as required.

- Check, order and maintain consumables and chemicals.

- Obtain quotes, and arrange replacement of equipment as required.

Key selection criteria

Essential
  • Diploma or Bachelor\'s Degree in aquaculture, biological sciences, marine science, zoology or a related discipline.
  • Experience in the husbandry of aquatic animals for research or production, completing laboratory analysis with limited supervision, and demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated intermediate computer skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office suite and corporate applications and the ability to operate computer controlled scientific instrumentation.
  • Evidence of working successfully and productively within a multidisciplinary team environment, among different cultures and position levels (e.g. technicians, academic staff, students), and the ability to effectively communicate in English in both oral and written mediums.
  • Demonstrated well-developed organisational and time management skills, to manage own workflow and prioritise to ensure targets are met.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and weekend shifts, as required for project operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in standard laboratory techniques, familiarity with water quality testing equipment, demonstrated understanding of Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), and animal ethics legislation.
Desirable
  • Experience in recirculating aquaculture system.
  • Understanding of the requirements for accurate data recording and analyses for scientific publication.
