Job Description


A Research Assistant position is currently available in the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS). The Earth Observatory of Singapore was founded with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies: https://earthobservatory.sg/
The Asian School of the Environment is an interdisciplinary school that integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to addressing key environmental challenges related to climate change, geohazards, sustainablity and global environmental change, with a focus on Southeast Asia: https://www.ntu.edu.sg/ase.
The successful candidate will join a team at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) and Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University who are working towards developing automated capabilities for remote-sensing based monitoring of natural hazards and mapping of natural disasters across Southeast Asia. The project aims to map floods, land subsidence, volcano monitoring, tectonic deformation, coastal change and earthquake studies, and to provide timely information to regional decision makers and disaster responders across the region.
Job Responsibilities

  • Works as a software engineer on the project
  • Help with software development of new features and mission control of a near-real-time, partially automated system that will use remote sensing data for monitoring of hazards and mapping of disasters
  • Development of additional features in our web-based interface according to user requirements
  • Coordination with scientists at the Earth Observatory of Singapore to integrate post-processing algorithms for SAR data into the disaster response system
  • Troubleshoot issues raised and develop fixes to ensure our system is always ready for response
Job Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in computer science, remote sensing, data analytics, earth science, or natural hazards
  • Strong experience with Python is a requirement. Experience working with cloud-computing platforms and distributed systems, and/or in using remote sensing to map natural hazards and disasters is advantageous
  • Willingness to learn tools associated with cloud-based distributed systems, web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Docker, Elasticsearch)
  • Willingness to learn scientific processing software and tools.
  • Strong English and communication skills, both written and oral as medium of communication within the institute and for ease of communication with international collaborators
  • Strong program management skills (project workflow planning, trouble shooting, etc.)
