The Asian School of Environment (ASE) is seeking to employ a Research Assistant for a duration of 6 months. The primary responsibility of the role is to conduct a suite of biochemical analysis to characterize peat and soil and root samples, and to help with laboratory administrative task related to the project, such as ordering equipment, and helping administer the grant. As a Research Lab Assistant, you will be an essential part of our Forest Ecology team, and we welcome individuals with laboratory and administrative experience who are enthusiastic, organized, and detail-oriented to apply. You will join the growing Forest Ecology group at ASE working under Dr Nanette Raczka and Asst. Prof. Eleanor Slade, joining a vibrant, international scientific department.
Key Responsibilities:
Coordinating lab activities with undergraduate students
Helping with chemical extractions of peat/soil samples
Aid in chemical and mycorrhizal analysis of root samples
Conducting various lab analyses, including but not limited to enzymes, total phosphorus, secondary, pH metabolites, and total C/N.
Assisting with day-to-day running of the Lab and grant administration e.g. ordering equipment/chemicals and ensuring cleanliness, and coordinating with collaborators overseas.
Gathering all data in a proper manner for statistical analysis, with the aim of publication in a scientific journal
Assisting with the data analysis and writing for publications
Short trips to the peat forest in Brunei for fieldwork may be required.
Job Requirements:
BSc in Biological Sciences
Preferably with prior experience in soil ecology or peatlands research and with administrative experience
Knowledge and enthusiasm for working on research related to tropical peatlands
Experience or knowledge on soils or peat samples
Experience in wet chemistry, particularly in setting up standard curves and wet chemical extractions
Experience of spectrophotometric techniques, particularly microplate readers
Experience working with university administrative systems such as Concur, Ariba, RISE
Willingness to learn new techniques and skills
Good team work and collaboration skills
Good English oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently
