The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Assistant in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a leading department for microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology education and research, focusing on translational outcomes ( ). Appointments will be made on a yearly contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension, depending on performance and outcomes.

Purpose of the post
The research assistant will provide support in the teaching and management of day to day operations of the laboratories in the Department.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching - assist in practical preparation and set up, including leading and performing practical trials, preparing materials and arranging workstations. Sourcing for reagents, assist instructors in demonstrating techniques and principles relevant to the practical. Provide guidance and assistance to students during lab sessions ensuring safety and proper technique
  • Safety matters - Understand all applicable health & safety regulations, training & reporting requirements, and standard operating procedures associated with workshop safety. Assist in regulated chemical and biological inventory. Support lab manager to identify hazardous conditions, to determine safe procedures and controls, and to implement and enforce standard safety procedures. To create and review standard operating procedures and risk assessments. Assist in developing, niche procedure or specific equipment procedure safety documentation. Housekeeping of safety tools, e.g. Biological and Chemical Spills kits, Safety shower and safety eyewash
  • Facilities and Equipment management - Keep the laboratory workspace and equipment in a good condition at all time. Liaise with vendors for equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Administrative duties - procurement duties, good recording keeping of purchases, licensing and maintenance contracts. Purchase of core consumables and track stock inventory of lab supplies
Qualifications
The applicant should:
  • Have a good BSc (Hons) in Life Sciences or related disciplines
  • be able to work independently and in a team, attention to detail
  • Minimum two years of experience in teaching and laboratory management
  • Experience in Microbiology or Immunology technique will be an advantage
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate\'s qualifications and experience.
