The Ho lab is a world leader on small open-reading frame-encoded peptides (SEPs) and specialises in discovering new peptides required for mitochondrial function and metabolism. We previously discovered new mito-SEPs (mitochondrial sORF-encoded peptides) (Zhang et al., 2020, Nature Communications) and are working to assign molecular functions to them, with a special focus on the those involved in immune-metabolism. To this end, we aim to uncover new concepts in the metabolic regulation of immune function. The lab uses a combination of bioinformatics, biochemistry, animal modelling, CRISPR screening and single-cell omics in human and mouse systems to understand how mito-SEPs regulate cellular processes related to energy production.
