Research Fellow in the lab of Associate Professor Kevin Pethe

Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) established in September 2010 is a partnership between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The school operates from two campuses - Yunnan Campus at Nanyang Technological University and Novena campus. Our primary healthcare partner is the National Healthcare Group (NHG) which comprises an integrated network of primary healthcare polyclinics, acute care hospitals such as Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and national specialist centres.

We are currently recruiting a Research Fellow who will be working in the microbiology and systems biology laboratory. The incumbent will study the mechanisms by study bioenergetics in pathogenic mycobacteria using a multidisciplinary approach combining functional genomics, chemical biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. He/She will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic research environment with access to state-of-the-art core facilities.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are emerging pathogens posing serious global health concerns. The most problematics NTM lung infections are caused by Mycobacterium abscessus and Mycobacterium avium. Both bacteria are naturally resistant to many antibiotics. Due to the absence of a standardized drug regimen, NTM infections often result in intractable lung diseases. We are developing new sterilizing drugs and drug regimens for NTM infections coupled with innovative delivery modality based on nanoparticle formulations. The incumbent will be involved in chemical biology efforts to identify new drugs targeting NTMs and in the development of co-formulation for aerosol and oral drug delivery.

Job responsibilities:

Lead research projects

Evaluate drug efficacy in animal model of bacterial infection

Evaluate bacterial virulence in animal models

Evaluate drug efficacy in vitro

Skills & qualifications:

PhD or qualification with expertise in bacteriology (BSL-2 or BSL-3 microorganisms), ideally on pathogenic mycobacteria

1 year experience as postdoctoral fellow

Expertise in cellular microbiology, chemical genetics, molecular biology and animal work
