Offer Description
High quantities of near surface carbon are known to be stored in tropical peatlands. However, most peatlands are remote and difficult to access due to swampy conditions, and persistent clouds often obscure the targets in optical remote sensing data. This project aims to develop and automate new techniques to quantify tropical peatland carbon stocks and changes in those stocks, by precisely measuring their topography and deformation using remote sensing observations from modern spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR; ALOS-2, L-band) and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR; GEDI, ICESat-2) missions. We will calibrate these observations using ground truth measurements and airborne LiDAR data in Brunei. The project will produce a tool for upcoming satellite SAR missions (NISAR by NASA-ISRO and ALOS-4 by JAXA, both L-band), with the aim to subsequently build a near-real-time peatland monitoring system for Southeast Asia.
This project requires both fieldwork experience and quantitative/data analysis skills to explore multiple remote sensing data sets. It will involve the compilation of several spatio-temporal satellite products and multiple airborne lidar data sets. The positions are available from now to 30-Jun-2024. Salary will be commensurate with experience, and it will be aligned with the NUS salary scale. An annual bonus, dependent on performance, is also potentially available, in-line with NUS policy.
Responsibility
The Research Fellow will lead the development of implementation workflow, fieldwork protocol and preparation. It also involves project and data management tasks, including but not limited to data collection, cleaning, and validation. S/he will work closely with the PI to ensure the requirements of project work plan are met.
