Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore seeks a Research Fellow to work on combining field work, geochemistry, petrology, geophysics and modelling to better understand the signs of a potential caldera eruption, using case studies from around the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Asst Prof Euan Mutch and/or Prof Simon Redfern and will collaborate with the researchers from the \xe2\x80\x98Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia\xe2\x80\x99 project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia. We will be hiring a large number of research staff and students to work on this project, so it promises to be a very exciting time to join our team!

Job Responsibilities:

Reconstructing magma storage depths/conditions for a suite of volcanic systems and relating them to local tectonics

Volcanic ash dispersal modeling

Assessing the current state of one of more potential caldera reservoirs from petrology, geophysics, and modelling

Reconstructing the temporal evolution of magma reservoir properties at one of more potential caldera systems

Publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences

Potential for co-mentorship of PhD students within the team

Engaging in collaborative discussions with the large number of team members and collaborators for InVEST

Job Requirements:

Ph.D. in Earth science, geochemistry, petrology, volcanology, geophysics, geodesy, natural hazards, computational modelling, or a related field

Fieldwork experience is desired but not required

Experience in processing petrological and/or geophysical data is desired

Demonstrated expertise in petrological modeling and/or volcano deformation, with a desire to develop skills in the complementary field is a requirement
