(2-year contract), Qualitative / Mixed Methods Social Science Researcher

Short Description

The Institute for Adult Learning (IAL), an autonomous institute of the Singapore University of Social Sciences, is at the forefront of building capabilities and continuing professional development for an effective, innovative and responsive adult learning sector.

The IAL Research Division champions applied and innovative research grounded in academic rigour to provide a strong knowledge base for the development of practice in CET, sustainable economic and workforce performance, and informed policies and practices. Using interdisciplinary approaches employing both quantitative and qualitative techniques, the research covers CET system design and practices, adult education, lifelong learning, jobs, skills, careers, labour market issues, pedagogy, andragogy, and praxis, among others.



In this position, the appointee will support the design and conduct of qualitative research projects, reporting to the Assistant Director. The responsibilities of the Researcher include, but are not limited to the following: * Design, develop and implement specific research projects including:

  • Conducting literature review
  • Designing research instruments
  • Sourcing for research participants and collecting data
  • Performing data analysis
  • Performing research writing in required formats (reports, papers, articles)
  • Managing data assets
  • Performing other project administrative duties
  • Conduct dissemination activities such as seminars, webinars and conferences, as well translation of materials into outputs suitable for reaching out to non-research stakeholders
  • Perform any other duties, including cross-divisional projects or events, that may be assigned by the management from time to time to meet the needs of the organisation and changing environment.
Job Requirements
  • A degree in the social sciences, humanities, or arts. Candidates with a graduate research degree will have an advantage.
  • Interest to pursue research in the field of economic development and social equity, as regards to work, employment, learning, skills, labour markets and technology
  • At least 3 years of work experience in research and/or policy areas using qualitative and/or mixed methods. Those without the requisite experience may still apply.
  • Sound analytical skills, with capacity to connect theoretical knowledge to current and emerging societal issues
  • Resourceful and respectful in engaging research participants, meeting ethical standards expected in research
  • Good report writing, communication, administrative and project management skills
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
  • The successful appointee will be based in IAL Campus located at Lifelong Learning Institute at Paya Lebar.
