Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group's reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Senior Legal Counsel.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support on a variety of legal matters and review and negotiation of documentation relating to the products offered by HSBC Securities Services business
  • To be considered to be a trusted adviser to the business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner to HSBC Securities Services
  • Provide support and guidance to HSBC Securities Services with regard to legal risks arising in jobholder's area of expertise
  • Provide prompt, commercial, practical and sometimes complex (under supervision) and / or specialized legal advice to HSBC Securities Services
  • Be proactive in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications
  • Ensure senior legal management is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business area and major legislative changes in area of expertise
  • Recommend selection of panel law firms and other appropriate external parties
  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with SGH LGA team members and legal advisers supporting allocated businesses or projects in other jurisdictions, and senior managers of the allocated businesses or projects and support functions
  • Participate effectively as part of the Singapore Legal Team and the Group Legal function
  • Establish and develop a strategy for the co-ordination and promotion of initiatives that result in the sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the Singapore Legal Function
  • Provide legal services in a cost-effective manner
  • Co-ordinate and manage the approach to legal risk in HSS legal and business departments for which the jobholder is responsible, to ensure that the interests of the HSBC Group are adequately protected
  • Implement legal risk management policies and controls in relevant business areas
  • Assist the business to remain compliant with legal risk management requirements set out in the Group Standards Manual and Legal FIM
  • Maintain internal HSBC control standards, including the timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators
  • Manage operational risk, including its identification, assessment, mitigation and control, loss identification and reporting
Requirements

Requirements
  • Qualified lawyer with at least 5 years of relevant post qualification experience in general corporate, securities and banking law
  • Experienced and confident practitioner
  • Up-to-date knowledge of developments in own industry sector
  • Able to handle a diverse range of issues
  • Self-starter, independent with good organizational skills
  • Communication and inter-personal skills
  • Lateral thinking/problem solving skills
  • Stamina and ability to work under pressure
  • Funds experience an advantage, but not essential
  • Team player willing to work with other members of the legal team
  • Able to work independently in routine matters
  • Internalised value structure compatible with HSBC such as honesty, integrity, dependable, open, balance, connected and a strong sense of doing the right thing
