Commercial serves as the key interface between Rio\xe2\x80\x99s production assets and the market (customers and suppliers), reaching horizontally across product groups and vertically from supplier to customer, generating insights and opportunities to unlock Rio Tinto\xe2\x80\x99s full commercial potential from current value chains and future growth opportunities.
Today, Rio faces an array of long-term challenges and opportunities across our markets which Commercial will play a key role in addressing. Growing customer demand for battery materials, increasing ESG requirements, geopolitical tensions between our core market and industrial bases, major shifts in the iron ore landscape, and increasing supply chain disruptions will all require active support from Commercial to manage.


Internally, the drive towards Best Operator needs to be strengthened through Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) processes working in parallel with, and closely linked to RTSPS. Commercial priorities in 2023 will focus on seizing value opportunities from these trends, mitigating their potential negative impacts and supporting our production assets as they handle production variabilities while managing customer relationships.

About the AoE (Area of Expertise)Sales & Marketing is accountable for Rio Tinto\xe2\x80\x99s worldwide activities related to bulk materials, metals and minerals that we mine or produce and as one of the key pillars of the Commercial 2.0 Strategy was to create an AoE for S&OP which would support accelerating the S&OP maturity process across all product groups.
A mature S&OP process will enhance RTSPS and operational decisions, such as determining the optimal product mix and stock levels, better managing asset and market volatility \xe2\x80\x93 enhancing the customer experience and value capture. Rio\xe2\x80\x99s global presence and optionality across the mine-to-market value chain, underpinned by S&OP and market analysis, can also offer a potential edge in capturing value opportunities through Trading.
It is recognised that Mature S&OP processes will allow us to connect our assets to our customers, optimising the end-to-end value chain. This requires strengthening of collaboration and effective interfaces between the different areas of the Group, so that we can respond dynamically to changes at our operations or in the market, manage the continuously moving bottlenecks within our supply chains, and leverage operational optionality for value generation.
About the role In response to the above context, we are looking for a Senior Manager \xe2\x80\x93 Sales & Operations Planning to lead the central AoE which will support our ambition of accelerating S&OP maturity and in so doing create and capture greater value for our customers, suppliers and RioTinto.
The key activities of the AoE include;
  • Develop S&OP strategy, roadmap with supporting resource and talent managemnt plan
  • Promote and lift awareness of S&OP across Commercial and Product Groups (PG)
  • Interface with Commercial and other RT stakeholders \xe2\x80\x93 e.g. Finance, Trading, Commercial Operation, RTSPS and IOPS reference group to embed S&OP into the core processes across RioTinto
  • Support problem solving for large and complex opportunities by coordinating additional internal and external resources
  • Support relationship with Digital team for PG specific opportunities
  • Drive Process and Digital tools applicable to all groups (standardization, speed)
  • Consolidated reporting for Commercial MBR and Plan review
  • Provide Governance over S&OP activities to maximise value of standardization (where appropriate)

Based in Singapore and reporting to the Head of Sales & Marketing, and will be responsible for coordinating with a global team of S&OP\xe2\x80\x99s in both the Atlantic & Pacific Regions

About you To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • University degree, preferably in engineering or business / supply chain
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in supply chain management experience across the mining and metals / bulk commodities
  • Strong know-how in optimising raw material usages through supply chain excellence
  • Demonstrated abilities to manage conflicting demands from internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complexity and present comprehensible and workable proposals to senior managements
  • Effective influencing skills when engaging a wide range of target audience, ranging from MDs and GM commercial to Operations and production leaders
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise and organise a number of concurrent demand under tight time pressure
