About us
As part of the ongoing commercial strategy, Rio Tinto Commercial has established a Trading division. The role of Integrated Trading is to enhance our commercial abilities in an agile structure that will capture additional value through effective management of market risks, and from optionality in our physical assets and contract portfolio. Trading is expanding in carbon markets as they become increasingly critical venues for RTC to address our carbon footprint and enable the development of commercial strategies and activities related to carbon.

About the role
We are now recruiting for a Senior Originator, Carbon to become a core member of the Carbon trading team reporting to the Manager, Carbon, Integrated Trading. This is a small, centralized execution-focused team focused on high-quality offset solutions. In addition to Rio developing our own portfolio of high-quality projects that interact with our landholdings, the intention is to invest in high-quality offsets in the broader regions that we operate. This role will be at the forefront of originating and closing deals in the voluntary carbon markets. The Senior Originator, Carbon will be responsible for:

• Co-developing and executing Rio Tinto’s external offset sourcing strategy.

• Sourcing and screening high-quality offsets to build a technologically and geographically diverse portfolio.

• Developing, updating and applying RT’s offset quality standard.

• Executing spot to long term transactions and taking those deals through the entire lifecycle from inception to close and ensuring relevant internal stakeholders are involved.

• Working closely with the RT Nature Solutions team to assess investments in projects and ensure a balance in our portfolio between internally generated and externally sourced offsets.

• Ensuring sourcing strategy is ‘future-fit’ and evolving with shifting market dynamics (i.e. reduction vs removals, geography, labels, offset type etc.)

• Build networks with high-quality/integrity project developers, brokers, intermediaries, exchanges and other key market participants.

• Understanding pricing dynamics and value of different types of offsets across (but not limited to) technologies, geographies and vintages.

• Ensuring Rio Tinto sources the highest-quality offsets at commercially appropriate prices.

• Keeping abreast of accounting, accreditation and carbon methodology changes, updating RT’s internal offset quality standard accordingly.

• Knowledge of risk management approaches in the area of carbon offsets and able to assist Risk implementation of appropriate controls.

• Co-developing Rio Tinto’s retirement strategy, working closely with the commercial and climate strategy teams

What you will need for the role To succeed in this role, you will have:

• Post-graduate degree in relevant sustainability field, e.g. climate finance, environmental economics, market transformation.

• Deep offset work-experience, either as a trader, originator, project developer or intermediary with a significant offset portfolio.

• Demonstrated experience of closing carbon offset deals

• Keyed into voluntary carbon market and expectations from private sector.

• Experience within industry associations dealing with global sustainability issues.

• Multiple languages a plus.
