Senior / Research Scientist (numerical Weather Prediction Branch)

Singapore, Singapore

Job Description

[What the role is]
The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) is a division of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). At CCRS, our mission is to advance scientific understanding of tropical climate variability and change and its associated weather systems affecting Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, so that the knowledge and expertise can benefit decision makers and the community. Our vision is to be a world leading centre in tropical climate and weather research focussing on the Southeast Asia region.

Within CCRS, the Department for Weather Research (DWR) leads the research and development (R&D) of our core tropical, convective-scale \xe2\x80\x98SINGV\xe2\x80\x99 modelling system for both weather and climate change applications. DWR also undertakes R&D and oversees the transition to operations of SINGV-based local numerical weather prediction (NWP), marine and haze/air quality forecasting with lead times up to a week ahead. The DWR works closely with CCRS\xe2\x80\x99s Department of Climate Research (DCR) and High Performance Computing (HPC) Branch, MSS forecasters, local universities, and a number of international organisations including the UK Met Office, Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and US National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Since 2022, CCRS has been a core member of the international Unified Model (UM) partnership.

The DWR/NWP branch is responsible for developing and improving nowcasting and regional NWP systems, and translating the outputs into customised products for supporting MSS weather services and other stakeholders. The branch also works closely with local agencies, institutes of higher learning and UM partners to share research outcomes and deliver improved forecast products for the region.

Rainfall nowcasting is a key R&D area at CCRS to provide timely and actionable very-short-range (
1hr) heavy rainfall warnings to the general public and government agencies. This new position will work closely with partners including PUB (Singapore\xe2\x80\x99s National Water Agency), the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and local research institutes to combine local (C-, S- and X-band) radar data, NWP output, and physics\xe2\x80\x94informed machine learning algorithms to develop advanced rainfall nowcasting capabilities for Singapore.

[What you will be working on]

To keep abreast with the latest research and developments in the areas of rainfall nowcasting in the deep tropics.

Developing, improving and verifying existing nowcasting algorithms using radar/satellite and NWP outputs.

Exploring novel nowcasting algorithms, focusing on developing physics-informed Machine Learning techniques, to improve nowcasts in Singapore and nearby region.

Working with local and international institutes to cultivate relevant research collaborations and partnerships.

Publishing research outcomes in peer-reviewed publications and presenting findings at international meetings.

Communicate relevant research findings to relevant stakeholders through verbal briefings and reports.

[What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess the following:

Masters or PhD degree (or equivalent) in data analytics, data science, computer science or a related field.

At least 3 years of research experience in developing and/or applying advanced data analytics in research projects processing big datasets.

High level of proficiency in scientific computing.

Familiarity with container platforms and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) computing is desirable.

Familiarity with NWP, radar data processing and quality control is desirable.

Good written and verbal communication skills, with publications in peer-reviewed journals are desirable.

Ability to work effectively to deadlines on individual projects and as part of a diverse team.

Interest and passion to deliver relevant R&D for societal benefits.

Ability to network effectively with the local and international research community.

Ability to engage and communicate with scientists and stakeholders from diverse communities.

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment

Applicants will be updated on the status of their applications within 4 weeks of the closing date of this job posting.
