-What you’ll do
Provide thorough and accurate commercial analysis to proposed commercial transactions as well as providing performance analysis of the commercial and operational activity of the freight portfolio. To develop strategy through the budget process, and support continuous improvement projects within the Shipping team.
Typical tasks: Business Analysis and Evaluation

  • Provide detailed commercial and financial analysis of proposed commercial transactions, such as long-term charters, investments and infrastructure contracts.
  • Provide an independent review of proposed transactions before they are brought forward for approval; this will involve a financial and strategic assessment of the transaction against budget targets and overall objectives.
  • Post implementation reviews of large transactions such as COAs and time charters.
Operating Model Accountability
  • Provide coordination with support from Shipping Management to imbed Anglo American Operating Model principles into the Shipping business
  • Management of performance measurement processes and management routines within Shipping
  • Delivery of reporting framework supported by AAOM principles
  • Accountable for the continuous improvement structures within the AAOM framework for Shipping production work and processes.
Stakeholder Management
  • Accountable for the interface with external market analysts to uncover intelligence used to advise the Shipping Team.
  • Accountable for the interface with external market data & research providers to uncover pricing intelligence used to advise the Commodity Marketing and Risk and Performance management teams around market reference pricing parameters, term contract negotiations and arbitrage identification.
Reporting
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly market analysis used as an input to the quarterly market forecasts, weekly reports, daily internal notes and ad hoc reports and internal studies
  • Preparation of Board Reporting for internal Marketing and Shipping Boards.
Specialist support
  • Provide back-up to Manager Shipping Strategy & Business Development in the delivery of presentations to Head of Shipping, Shipping Management, the Marketing and Production Business Units, Group Finance and external parties when required.
  • Coordinate budgeting and planning process in coordination with the Finance Business Partner
  • Support Group Tax in relation to incentive scheme requirements for the Shipping organisation
Commercial Value Generation
  • Assist with the delivery of market intelligence (including pricing curve data) through the process that includes gathering, collating, filtering, analysing, and interpreting market data and intelligence specific to the dry bulk freight market and related industry.
  • Capture and communicate collective knowledge gathered from the Chartering and Financial Trade Teams as well as other internal and external sources via various channels and portals.
  • Provide pricing and commercial analysis and recommendations of financial and physical transactions (i.e. providing a business analysis and review role for commercial transactions).
  • Problem solving – through interactions with the entire Shipping team, this role is expected to highlight areas of challenge and improvement. And then develop ideas and concepts to solve highlighted problems.

Qualifications
-What we’re looking for
  • Knowledge of dry bulk freight markets and ability to build an industry network.
  • Able to marry macro-economic context with micro-market analysis to identify the most important drivers of price and commercial variables over short and medium term horizons. Knowledge of financial and futures markets a strongly positive element.
  • Knowledge and ability to translate complex market data into succinct reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current quantitative and qualitative marketing research methodologies, determining which methodologies to apply. Leverages market information to assist in developing strategies and opportunities that create value for the business.
  • Familiarity with broad scanning techniques to interpret trends, research competitor activity and market conditions; develops and implements solutions to realise market potential and optimise opportunities for the Marketing Business Unit.
  • Well-developed modelling and analytical capabilities.
  • Strong computer literacy (especially Excel).
  • Analytical mind-set – able to disaggregate problems and make quantitative estimates of value creation for initiatives. Systematic, methodical, organised.
  • Confident research skills with an inquisitive and broad scanning approach – able to ask insightful and probing questions to get to the bottom of a situation or problem; doesn’t stop at the first answer.
  • Sound writing capability and willingness to develop strong presentation skills, tailored to the specific needs and requirements of the audience.
  • Commercial and business acumen – ability to build understanding of chartering and trading fundamentals.
