The Role

The role provides an exciting opportunity to directly influence the energy transition within, and decarbonisation of, the maritime sector, whilst further progressing Shells safety and reputational performance. The project engineer will engage and facilitate input from Discipline Engineers, the Innovation Research Digitisation (IRD) Technology team, Projects &Technology (P&T) Subject Matter Expert\xe2\x80\x99s (SME) and Maritime Assurance & Operations. The role assists and understudies a Project Manager(s) with the project rather than discipline related technical issues and may incorporate developmental leadership of less complex projects or opportunities. What\xe2\x80\x99s the role? Accountabilities:
  • To provide support and assurance to Shell projects that have a maritime aspect to them (FLNG, Marine Terminals, FPSO, LNG/LH2/LCO2/Crude/Product & Chemical carriers, LNG bunker vessels and offshore wind). To deliver top quartile projects, on schedule and within a competitive budget.
  • To support the decarbonization of the maritime sector through the maturation of de-risked novel technology and improve safety through a human-centred design approach.
  • Proactively support project to achieve schedule through stakeholder engagement, experience to anticipate issues and using quality and schedule KPI\xe2\x80\x99s and tools
  • Provide project manager with updates on project performance including budget, schedule and quality at agreed intervals.
  • Refine project plans to accurately forecast budget and other resource requirements as input into department, project, business unit and Group plans.
  • To take charge of certain aspects of the design and construction under guidance from a Project Manager. To act as part of a site management team during construction.
  • Manage preparation of project deliverables aligned with Business Management System (BMS) and Project Management Framework (PMF) including Concept Selection, Basis for Design, outline technical specifications and evaluation of bids, design development processes and plan approval.
  • Maintain knowledge of upcoming changes in legislation, how they affect ship design and methods for compliance.
  • Maintain overview of ongoing projects in order to exploit synergies, best practices and technology innovations.
  • Work with SME\xe2\x80\x99s and discipline engineers in the production of project deliverables
  • Ensure that all advice/requirements and deliverables passed to the business comply with relevant internal and external standards and BMS process
  • The role is a development role as a step towards a Project Manager position.
  • The role involves supporting Maritime Project Managers, in compliance with the Shell Project Management Framework to:
    • Understand customers\xe2\x80\x99 needs for the maritime asset\xe2\x80\x99s functionality
    • Assess the project maritime risk and identify appropriate mitigations including Technology Maturation
    • Assess multiple concepts and determine feasibility
    • Define asset specifications and requirements
    • Define a contracting strategy and facilitate a tender process
    • Confirm design meets customer needs, Maritime safety requirements and applicable industry standards
    • Assuring that the construction execution is conducted in line with specification and to industry standard
    • Support the handover of the asset to operations
  • In support of the Technology (IRD) team the role will also likely involve the assessment, de-risking and development of innovative maritime solutions relating to:
    • Carriage of Liquified Hydrogen (LH2) (Cargo containments systems, cargo handling and transfer systems.
    • Propulsion systems utilizing H2 as Fuel (Fuel Cells).
    • Carriage of Liquified CO2 for Carbon Capture projects (Cargo containments systems, cargo handling and transfer systems].
    • Wind assisted propulsion project.
    • Safety \xe2\x80\x93 Human centred design solutions to address high risk operations including operation/testing of lifeboats, personnel transfer, confined space entry, mooring, collision avoidance and safe navigation.
    • Energy efficiency Technology (air lubrication, shaft generator, battery/hybrid systems etc.).

What we need from you We hope to see the following in your CV:
  • Chief Engineer (Due to license level) and having previous shore experience.
  • Knowledge of Flag and Classi\xef\xac\x81cation Society Rule and Regulations.
  • Awareness of relevant International codes and standards.
  • Experience in preparing schedules and cost estimate with track record of delivery.
  • Knowledge of data analytics and data science and data\xe2\x80\x99s potential to unlock new technologies, value, ship ef\xef\xac\x81ciency and emissions reduction.
  • Apply an integrated and learner mindset to identifying and managing risks and opportunities across TECOP to delivery of technology Projects. Project Management competency demonstrated through experience or formally, for example the Shell project academy Essentials of Project Delivery Course (EOPD).
  • High technical organizational and leadership capabilities in marine projects or operations with leadership, inter-personal and organizational skills.
  • Enthusiastic about new technology. Creative thinker.
  • A self-starter with drive - motivation and enthusiasm, with a clear mind and wanting to make a difference in this important position for Shell.
  • Performs well under pressure and thrives in challenging situations.
  • A team player with the necessary communication (oral and written) skills to interface with other disciplines.
  • Professional with ability to work with minimal supervision demonstrating leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to analyse data and develop proposals for solutions to a wide range of technical and operational problems.
