Teaching Assistants (Communications and New Media) (2 Positions)

The successful candidates will be offered in the first instance a one-year contract. Longer contracts would be offered at renewal depending on performance.

The expected commencement date for this position is 1 July 2024.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading research-intensive university ( ) that is consistently ranked among the world\'s top universities. Established in 2004, the Department of Communications and New Media (CNM) ( ) is a leader in communication and new media research and education. It offers undergraduate, honours and postgraduate programmes in communications and new media studies, with an innovative curriculum that introduces students to key debates in the areas of media and communication studies, communication management, interactive media design and cultural studies. Its students undertake industry immersion through its compulsory internship programme. Successful candidates for these positions will join an engaging community of 32 full-time faculty and approximately 800 undergraduate and graduate students.

We seek applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas: interactive writing; data journalism; digital/transmedia storytelling; media production; corporate communication; public relations; campaign management; social media PR; public relations writing; user experience design; media policy; public speaking; digital storytelling; interactive media design; digital/social media for strategic communication; basic chemistry and biology; game design; cultural studies; interdisciplinary topics like basic chemistry, biology, physiological medicine, etc; R or Python programming is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

The selected candidates are required to instruct a total of five (5) courses each academic year. Teaching responsibilities will be within the Communications and New Media undergraduate program and/or Master by Coursework programs. Additionally, successful candidates are anticipated to fulfill service roles within the department. The expected commencement date for this position is August 1, 2024.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must have good Honours degrees in communications or a closely affiliated discipline, skills and expertise in the relevant field by the appointment of start date. A genuine enthusiasm for working closely with students and a dedicated commitment to fostering student learning are indispensable qualities. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Meticulous attention to detail. Proficient in computer applications such as MS Office and PowerPoint.

Note that the Teaching Statement, together with documents on research (where applicable) and service contributions should be no more than a maximum of 3,000 words. Examples of consideration that can guide the candidate in making a case for teaching impact and leadership, with a focus on self, students, others, scholarship, future plans.
  • c. Teaching evaluations and peer review reports, if available. Other evidence of teaching excellence and/or other contributions to education e.g. curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, etc. should be provided.
