Mandai Wildlife Group is the steward of Mandai Wildlife Reserve, a unique wildlife and nature destination in Singapore that is home to world-renown wildlife parks which connect visitors to the fascinating world of wildlife. The Group is driving an exciting rejuvenation plan at Mandai Wildlife Reserve, adjacent to Singapore's Central Catchment Nature Reserve, that will integrate five wildlife parks with distinctive nature-based experiences, green public spaces and an eco-friendly resort.
Job Purpose
The European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management) residency program develops graduate veterinarians in the discipline of zoological medicine, which cares for the special needs of animals kept under human care and wildlife. The resident will receive the training required and be encouraged to credential and sit for the board examinations of either the European College of Zoological Medicine Zoo Health Management (ZHM) or American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM). The zoo veterinary resident works in a team environment to provide preventative and routine veterinary care, including multimodal treatments and surgery, to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the animals under the care of Mandai Wildlife Group.
The residency program is for a total period of 3 years, all of which will be spent in the two veterinary hospitals of Mandai Wildlife Group. The resident will be under direct supervision of an American College of Zoological Medicine (General Zoo) diplomate. Additional mentorship pertaining to avian medicine is provided a European College of Zoological Medicine (Avian Medicine) diplomate and an American Board of Veterinary Practitioner (Avian Practice) diplomate. Additionally, supervisory training for pathology will be provided by an Asian College of Conservation Medicine pathologist.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
(1) Manage the veterinary healthcare of all the animals in the collection across different taxonomic groups.
xc2xb7 Perform safe and effective physical, chemical and behavioural restraint on patients.
xc2xb7 Diagnose medical conditions using a wide range of diagnostic modalities available, including clinical pathology (haematology, biochemistry, endocrinology, immunology), diagnostic imaging (radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography), microbiology, cytology and more.
xc2xb7 Formulate treatment or management plans for individual and herd/flock health.
xc2xb7 Organise and lead field procedures, including the planning of manpower, logistics and safety aspects of the procedure.
xc2xb7 Perform basic soft tissue and orthopaedic surgeries.
xc2xb7 Perform invasive and non-invasive endoscopic procedures.
xc2xb7 Practice evidence-based medicine that is pragmatic for the animals.
xc2xb7 Perform necropsies and taking required samples for further diagnostics.
xc2xb7 Perform basic laboratory tests.
xc2xb7 Present cases and communicate opinions effectively at various forums.
xc2xb7 Manage operational emergency situations.
xc2xb7 Manage animal emergency and critical care scenarios, including the formulation of practical and effective intensive care for patients.
xc2xb7 Work well with the veterinary team and animal caretakers.
(2) Manage preventative health programs
Organise review of vaccination, parasite management and quarantine management plans.
xc2xb7 Drafting of action plans or standard operating procedures from Morbidity and Mortality analyses.
xc2xb7 Manage regular reviews of taxon based preventative health programs in Life Sciences.
xc2xb7 Manage public health aspects of veterinary medicine, especially where pertaining to zoonotic infectious diseases and pest control in the zoological collection.
xc2xb7 Ensure compliance with legislation in Singapore with international standards (CITES, EAZA)
xc2xb7 Provide advice on improvements to husbandry practices (e..g diet, enclosure design) toimprovethestandardsofhealthandwelfareofthe animals.
(3) Lead continuing education for the veterinary team.
xc2xb7 Cooperate and collaborate with other specialists and colleagues in other clinical and related disciplines to the benefit of human and animal health and welfare.
xc2xb7 Organise and lead journal clubs and clinical rounds with other house officers.
xc2xb7 Supervision of veterinary interns
xc2xb7 Represent Mandai Wildlife Group at international veterinary conferences.
xc2xb7 Conduct research and publish peer reviewed manuscripts in recognised zoological medicine journals.
xc2xb7 Maintain case logs, write case reports and more as required for board certification credentialing.
xc2xb7 Qualify for board certification.
Job Requirements:
xc2xb7 Internationally recognised degree in Veterinary Medicine.
xc2xb7 Singapore Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) licensed veterinarian, or eligible for license application.
xc2xb7 One year of a rotating multi-disciplinary internship or two years in general practice.
xc2xb7 Internship and/or clinical experience in zoological practice is preferred, but not necessary.
xc2xb7 Intermediate level of competencies in the management, technical and scientific aspects of zoo animals and wildlife medicine.
xc2xb7 Class 3 driving license.
xc2xb7 Good analytical skills.
xc2xb7 Ability to work in a veterinary team and with non-clinical departments in a zoological institute.
xc2xb7 Open mind to consider and adopt a team-based approach to clinical practice.
xc2xb7 Able to work in a multi-cultural and diverse environment.
xc2xb7 Excellent verbal and written English.
