Job Description



Job Summary
This position exists to review and analyze newly enacted, amended, repealed and transferred/renumbered legislation, case law, court rules, admin codes, regulations, other materials and slice and update these primary law and/or authored data in a timely, efficient and accurate fashion using current editorial systems and technology necessary to produce LexisNexis custom legal publications in all media. Responsible for administrative, editorial and organizational tasks required to ensure timely completion of editorial products on several jurisdictions. Work as part of a team to ensure the integrity of custom legal content along with enhancements for offline legal research products.
Accountabilities
The function is accountable in managing the following areas:
1. Meet the accurate, complete and timely CLP requirements by (a) setting priorities and adhering to critical deadlines and production schedules; (b) partnering with Charlottesville CLP editors, Indexers, ADP Editors, Print Comp Editors, Legal Analysts (CLP and Statecode) etc. to effectively communicate all content changes and additions, including those requested by the customer or product owner and (c) ensuring accuracy and relevance of content.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the legislative process and address internal and external customer concerns and questions regarding our products.
3. Maintain professional relationships with jurisdictional data owners for successful creation of products.
4. Demonstrate strong knowledge of LexisNexis products, databases, and workflows.
5. Attain jurisdictional understanding of editorial processes and policies as they pertain to assigned product, team, region, and customers.
6. Conduct and/or participate in product quality review and audit.
7. Perform administrative tasks such as collecting information from CLP Sharepoint, PSRs, previous style sample, etc.; Create a production schedule in Edsched and ensure that customer specifications are followed by creating and reviewing the Work Order. Regularly communicate product details/timelines, etc., to scheduling coordinators, management and other departments as directed.
8. Participate in training as required and seek out training for professional development or to maintain expertise in related work area.
9. Develop comprehensive knowledge of how the custom publication is being used by the specific customer and use that knowledge to guide work on the publication, particularly in scope development and note review.
10. Extract and edit datasets by utilizing current databases to access and slice relevant content for offline products, including: EDEN, EAS, NEPTune, ECS, MS Word, and InDesign in accordance with CLP guidelines without altering the text of the law.
11. Ensure that title, analyses, prelims, copyright information and logos are up-to-date and correct.
12. Conduct proof review: Thoroughly check material for content inclusion, style and formatting. Update with corrections and assure that all changes marked on first proof have been properly implemented on subsequent proofs.
13. View pubs and tasks considering production timelines, team/department priorities; follow-through in a timely manner on all tasks. Escalate challenges to resource and production demands.
14. Recognize potential errors/roadblocks. Identify process opportunities and take action to remediate problems and formulate process improvements.
15. Support and encourages team decisions. Assist colleagues with production needs within team/department in order to contribute to overall work/life balance concerns; Take time to share knowledge and expertise, mentor, etc., plus proactively recognize and address knowledge gaps and opportunities to build competence within team, department, and Charlottesville counterparts.
16. Other duties/adhoc tasks as assigned or needed by the business.
Qualifications/Requirements:
1. Proven first-rate sub-editing ability and application of house style
2. Proficiency in editing content in XML mark-up is an advantage
3. Great communication skills (experience working with legal professionals or similar is an advantage)
4. A keen eye for detail Administrative/organizational skills
5. Ability to prioritize own workload to meet tight deadlines
6. Ability to learn new skills and processes/ procedures quickly
8. Experience working in an area of some complexity and using professional knowledge to deliver results
9. Familiarity with working with editorial systems
10. Past experience of process driven editorial work is an advantage
11. Pro-active approach to solving complex problems
12. Experience of legal subject matter and legal document creation processes highly desirable
13 Interest in legal change and issues affecting the industry is desirable
14 Graduate or similar (law, English, history or other essay-based degree qualification desirable)
