Roles & Responsibilities The Director of Photography (DoP) establishes the overall visual style of the production and understands its creative vision in order to lead the photography sessions. He/She guides the camera, lighting and grip teams to achieve visual objectives of the content during the shoot. He/She determines the framing of shots and guides the cameras.
He/She may be required to identify specialty cameras such as 360 or underwater cameras that are required to shoot desired shots, and directs the operation of these cameras.
He/She is a creative thinker and collaborates with the creative leadership, while providing creative direction to the camera, lighting and grip departments.
He/She should have excellent technical knowledge of cameras, lenses, shooting equipment and digital processes. He/She is required to have knowledge of camera operations and lighting techniques. He/She possesses the artistic vision to visualise ideas. He/She should be aware of the best practices for camera techniques, post-production processes as well as colour and data management. He/She is expected to operate outdoors and may be required to travel.
Tasks

  • Analyse the production script to evaluate the suitability of the theme and the visual setting for the film.
  • Conduct blocking to guide cast and crew to identify and resolve any technical issues.
  • Contribute creative and camera input to create storyboards for the production.
  • Determine camera and lighting equipment required along with the gaffer in consideration of the allocated budget.
  • Develop the shot plan for the multiple or specialised camera set-up.
  • Experiment and select special lenses, filters or film stocks.
  • Finalise key locations for shoot in collaboration with the creative and Production team.
  • Frame each shot to establish technical parameters such as focal distances to achieve the desired visual impact.
  • Guide the framing and focus of shots during the shoot.
  • Guide the positioning of cameras as per the framing of the shots and the movement required.
  • Guide the teams in positioning of cameras for each shot.
  • Monitor the shoot of all major scenes on the viewing monitor to advise on camera and lighting adjustment.
  • Oversee the lighting and camera positioning before the first take.
  • Plan the framing for each shot to understand the camera equipment, and movements, angles and specific lighting required.
  • Provide key creative and camera inputs to visual styling by discussing with the creative leadership team.
  • Refine camera placement and focus length paths requirements based on shots taken.
  • Review raw footages with the creative leadership team to check shooting progress and determine if any shot needs to be re-taken.
  • Secure the necessary equipment for shoot by coordinating with the Production team.
  • Understand the creative vision for the multiple camera production.
  • Understand the creative vision for the production by communicating with the creative leadership.
