Job Description


The Asia Pacific Trading Desk is responsible for global coal and freight trading, including procurement and sale of Thermal & Coking coal and Iron Ore in Asia-Pacific/Australia markets. The Global Logistics team forms part of the desk and is responsible for managing the fulfilment and correct performance of physical supply contracts, acting as the main point of contact for operational matters .
This role within the Global Logistics team is to manage a proper flow of information to and between the traders, internal support functions and customers of the Asia Pacific Trading Desk as well as between suppliers, ports, agents and shipping companies. The role is based in Singapore with some focus on Chinese domestic markets and importation of international shipments into China.

  • Liaising with suppliers, receivers, miners, power plants, steel mills, ports, brokers, agents and vessels on a daily basis as the primary operational contact and initial escalation point of issues within the Asia Pacific trading desk
  • Identifying and challenging deviations from contractual performance, and managing the negotiation and settlement of contractual claims
  • Delivering timely and accurate position information to the trading desk
  • Providing new product research and analytical support where required to the trading desk and senior logistics personnel
  • Supporting the review and negotiation of and leading the optimisation of physical supply contracts
  • Assisting Front Office in managing contractual administrative/system matters, positions, hedges and other necessary support
  • Providing ops administrative trade functions in ensuring system entries of the Singapore and regional offices are accurately checked and updated
  • Ensuring a timely flow of information to internal functions for reporting and settlement, and the timely resolution of contractual and deal maintenance issues.
  • Coordinating business/process development alongside internal functions, including Back Office, Risk Control, Treasury and Legal & Compliance.
  • Providing back-up support for Singapore, Indonesia and China logistics personnel
Your powerful skills
  • Educated to degree level
  • Experience in a trading/logistics environment (grains/metals/coal/iron ore or other dry bulk commodities)
  • Experience of handling or supporting physical shipments under structured trade finance arrangements (letters of credit).
  • Proven track record of commercial optimisation and contractual risk management
  • Experience working in a numerate area / Excellent standard of numeracy
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, Excel
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, capability to work independently, being proactive and attention to detail
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise workload and work to tight timescales
  • Flexible and highly motivated team player
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong cultural awareness (specifically within Asian countries)
  • Confident decision making & good commercial awareness
