Job Description

The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) develops high-value manufacturing technology and human capital to enhance Singapore's manufacturing industry's competitiveness and collaborates with various multinational and local companies in sectors such as precision engineering, medtech, aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, marine and semiconductor. It is a research institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).

SIMTech, A*STAR is looking for a highly motivated, independent, and innovative quick learner with excellent interpersonal skills to join the Additive Manufacturing Group. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop himself/herself in the relevant additive manufacturing (AM) competencies and to participate in research and industry projects. The researchers at SIMTech have access to the state-of-the art equipment and are involved in a dynamic and collaborative R&D environment.

Successful candidate will be expected to work closely with various stakeholders and contribute in the R&D activities in the technical track of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) based metal 3D printing where he/she will be carrying out work scopes including:

  • Conducting extensive AM reviews on the state of the art and charting research directions.
  • Performing, leading, and delivering on research activities in LPBF and in-process monitoring for detection of defects and quality assurance through competitive-funded and industry-led commercial projects.
  • Supporting new research activities through industry proposal discussions and competitive grant writing relating to metal additive manufacturing in-situ monitoring, quality assurance, and materials.
  • Working with internal and external partners, as well as guiding engineers and students on research projects as part of the technical effort.
  • Writing scientific articles.
Job Requirements
  • PhD degree in laser powder bed fusion process monitoring or an appropriate engineering discipline with 2 years of research experience in additive manufacturing process monitoring.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in the following areas
  • Understanding of laser-material interaction for in-situ process monitoring, part quality, and material properties.
  • Data analysis of in-process monitoring sensor values for prediction of part quality using statistic and machine learning algorithms.
  • Operation knowledge and experience of laser powder bed fusion machines including in-process monitoring data acquisition.
  • Metal material characterization through destructive and non-destructive test operation and analysis such as sample preparation, mechanical testing, and microscopy.
  • Computer aided design software experience for manipulation of digital designs, design for additive manufacturing, and preparation of print job files.
  • Strong publication track record.
  • Diligent and possess positive work attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently in a team
  • Good communication, writing and presentation skills.
