What the role is:

Situated within the historic Istana Kampong Gelam, a gazetted national monument, the Malay Heritage Centre showcases the history, culture and contributions of the Malay community within the context of Singapore\'s history and multi-cultural society.

In this role, you should have a strong passion and interest in Malay history, culture and heritage. You are excited about the vast, untapped knowledge of Malay heritage and relish the opportunity to tell stories of the Malay world to different groups of audience, bringing history and culture to life. You understand the importance of establishing partnerships and the need for building rapport and engaging the community to increase appreciation and understanding of Malay heritage.

Responsibilities

  • Develop framework for research on cultural heritage and histories of the Malay community in Singapore as well as of the Malay world.
  • Produce research and work with researchers or community contributors based on the framework.
  • Research, identify and acquire new artefacts to strengthen collection on Malay heritage. This includes building and maintaining relationships with potential donors and donors as well as other community organisations. Beyond acquisitions, propose strategic loans from other institutions or collectors.
  • Conceptualise and develop storylines and narratives for MHC\'s permanent galleries, special exhibitions and travelling exhibitions related to Malay history, culture and heritage. Exhibitions may take different forms - both physical and digital.
  • Work closely with a wide-range of parties such as collections managers, conservators, designers, IT specialists and other related parties to develop and produce exhibitions.
  • Collaborate with other departments within MHC including education, outreach, programming and marketing to further the awareness and appreciation of MHC\'s narrative
  • Actively identify, develop relations and partnerships with stakeholders through co-created programmes, initiatives and other forms of engagement.
Requirements
  • Preferably background in Sociology, Anthropology/Archaeology, Malay or Indonesian studies, Southeast Asian studies, History/Art History, Cultural Studies and Arts Management
  • At least 5 - 8 years of experience in related curatorial or research work.
  • Previous research and publication experience is an added advantage
  • Strong passion and interest in both local and Malay history, culture and heritage
  • Due to the nature of this role, the incumbent should be effectively bilingual in English and Malay, as he/ she would be required to liaise with Malay-speaking partners/ stakeholders.
  • Possess excellent writing, research, communication and project management skills
  • Ability to multitask and work within deadline.
  • Able to work closely with digital specialists to develop digital experiences
  • Meticulous, creative, innovative, and resourceful in exploring alternative ways to ensure projects can be carried out
  • Able to work independently and be a good team player
