The Role Responsibilities

  • Act as a trusted advisor across the global Trade Finance business, supporting growth plans, new product development across the range of Trade products and strategic initiatives.
  • Identifying legal risks, communicated such risks clearly to senior stakeholders, provide concise, easy to understand and fit for purpose legal advice and solutions to senior stakeholders
Strategy
  • Be a trusted advisor and collaborator to senior stakeholders with respect to business as usual matters, business-related issues, strategic initiatives, governance, operational questions, communications, troubleshooting and escalations.
  • Maintain a keen ability to identify potential risks, gaps and inefficiencies in Trade Legal’s practices, operations, advice, guides and standards. Collaborate across SCB Legal as and when required to deliver consistent advice across businesses.
Business
  • Expertise in trade finance and awareness of legal risks arising in respect of the banks’ various trade finance products and ability to advise the business accordingly.
  • Proactively and collaboratively advise on, support, manage, and undertake the legal work required for Trade’s strategic projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure a strong network and relationship with global legal team to promptly provide legal support BAU and for strategic projects where required.
Processes
  • Work with peers in SCB Legal and across the control functions to ensure an effective approach to legal risk management across Trade and the delivery of consistent legal advice and application of governance and standards across different businesses.
People and Talent
  • Whilst this is not a management role, the candidate should always lead by example in terms of conduct in all interactions with stakeholders.
Risk Management
  • Within the Group’s overall Operational Risk Management Framework contribute to an appropriate risk-based approach to assessing, measuring, monitoring, managing, reducing and reporting Legal risk arising in Trade.
  • Act quickly and decisively when any Legal risk and control weaknesses become apparent and ensure they are addressed within an appropriate timeframe and escalated, where appropriate.
Governance
  • Demonstrate and be responsible for an active awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework in which the Group, Trade and Trade Distribution operate and the regulatory requirements and expectations relevant to the role.
  • Maintain effective processes (including training, advice, and support) to ensure that policies, procedures, and standards addressing legal risk in Trade and Trade Distribution are properly and effectively implemented.
Regulatory & Business Conduct
  • Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct.
  • Contribute to the Trade Legal team targets and achieve the outcomes set out in the Bank’s Conduct Principles.
  • Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.
Key Stakeholders
  • Product Managers, Salespeople, Credit Officers, RMs, Operations, Legal colleagues in country and in the region/group, implementation managers and others.
Other Responsibilities
  • Execute and exemplify bank’s values.

Our Ideal Candidate
  • Qualified lawyer from Singapore or another common law jurisdiction, 7+ years PQE.
  • Extensive experience in trade finance, including documentary trade, open account trade products such as receivables services, supply chain finance and structured trade solutions and trade distribution.
  • In-depth knowledge of security structures and requirements.

Role Specific Technical Competencies
  • Able to provide sound legal advice and transactional support to deal teams in Trade Finance across all products, in consideration of product and legal nuances and multi-jurisdictional implications as applicable
  • Working closely and effectively as a trusted advisor with Sales, Credit, Product, Trade Operations, Trade Credit Insurance, Country Legal and Documentation teams, sharing specialist knowledge and experience and best practices
  • Provide effective and prompt support to Product legal and other lawyers in different jurisdictions and where relevant, managing external counsel
  • Effectively and independently manage a challenging and changing portfolio of clients and bringing the technical lens of Trade and legal knowledge. This includes acquiring expertise in all trade finance products offered by the bank as a matter of priority.
  • Assure that legal risks are identified and mitigated, or are raised (including cross border risks)
  • Drive the engagement on new product developments/ global product launches, and global template documentation
  • Manage effectively issues involving product related legal, regulatory and reputational risks, to deliver positive outcomes and to reduce regulatory incidents.
  • Ensure consistency of approach and that minimum bank standards are met in providing advisory and transactional support, including negotiating and agreeing client documentation.
  • Establish good communications with Product Legal specialists and Regional / country Legal & Compliance, including keeping informed of material local developments and risks, working as a collaborative team player.
