Job Description


The VP Law, Asia Pacific for J&J Innovative Medicine serves as the strategic and legal adviser to the Company Group Chairman, Asia Pacific and as a member of the Asia Pacific Leadership Team which represents Japan, ANZ, China, North Asia, Southeast Asia and India.

The VP Law, Asia Pacific Innovative Medicine, heads a team of 25+ senior pharmaceutical lawyers and contract professionals who are responsible for advising and executing against the APAC business strategy to win for patients. This APAC legal team advises in-market Managing Directors, their leadership teams and businesses as well as the Asia Pacific Strategy Office and Commercial Excellence regional teams. The VP Law, Asia Pacific Innovative Medicine is accountable for assuring that the APAC Legal Team is driving, advising, and supporting all general and commercial legal matters for these businesses and teams. The VP Law, Asia Pacific Innovative Medicine is also responsible for assuring that the APAC Legal team is working effectively and collaboratively across all Legal Practice Groups supporting APAC, including Litigation and Investigations, HR/ER, Regulatory, Privacy, Business Development, Intellectual Property, and Supply Chain.

The VP Law, Asia Pacific Innovative Medicine also serves on the General Counsel, Innovative Medicine, Leadership Team and the AP GLO leadership team, sponsoring and leading key GLO priorities and projects including DE&I and civil justice reform. The VP Law, Asia Pacific Innovative Medicine is a member of the GLO Global Leaders\' Forum.

The APAC Innovative Medicines Legal team is responsible for delivery of some of the most innovative and transformative projects for the GLO including technology enablement for matter management and delivery of a strategy to enable management decisions to be made systematically and based on robust data. A key focus area of the APAC Innovative Medicines Legal team is engagement in the external environment. The VP Law, Asia Pacific Innovative Medicine plays an integral role in ensuring the delivery of these projects through the team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provides legal counsel, strategic guidance and support to J&J Innovative Medicine Company Group Chairman, Asia Pacific and the Asia Pacific Leadership Team. Takes leadership responsibility as a member of the APAC Innovative Medicine Leadership Team and positively influences management to make well-considered decisions and to achieve compliant success with the business.
  • Manages the performance and develops a team of more 24 senior/legal counsel that provide day-to-day legal services for the in-market Managing Directors, their leadership teams and businesses as well as the Asia Pacific Strategy Office and Commercial Excellence regional teams.
  • Proactively assesses legal risks to the operation and implements policies and procedures to address and manage those risks including preventative actions, trainings and communications.
  • Provides guidance on, and ensures compliance with, relevant laws and regulations and J&J policies applicable to the operations of J&J Innovative Medicine APAC, including any relevant industry association codes.
  • Liaison, co-ordination, collaboration and extremely close partnership with key business partnering functions including Healthcare Compliance, Human Resources, Finance, Communications Medical Affairs, Market Access, Privacy, GA&P, Regulatory and Quality.
  • Advises on business development initiatives.
  • Models highly ethical leadership. Leads in creating a Credo-based culture and decision-making.
  • Exercises extensive leadership responsibility. Plans workloads and establishes goals for the APAC Legal Team and holds the authority to render decisions on staff selection, promotion and compensation in consultation with WWVP, General Counsel, Innovative Medicine.
  • Proactively partners and works with other J&J lawyers in the market, region and globally to drive regional alignment with market, regional and global legal best practices and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
  • Strong leader with exceptional judgment and ability to think strategically, with a drive for compliant results and strong sense of ownership
  • Ability to not only develop appropriate strategic imperatives for the APAC Innovative Medicine Legal team, but to develop plans for execution of those strategic imperatives and deliver against those imperatives
  • Excellent relationship building and business partnering skills and proven ability to counsel senior management on complex and highly sensitive legal matters
  • Client oriented with the ability to proactively connect and engage with colleagues to find practical solutions and opportunities while prudently assessing the risks involved and advising accordingly
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across all levels of a matrixed organization
  • Objective thinker who is able to advance ideas and influence others
  • Ability to manage conflicts in an open and constructive manner, comfortable working as part of a team and speaking up when necessary
  • Ability to lead by example and ensure high ethical, legal and compliance standards and to be proactive in engaging the organization to identify opportunities to enhance ethics and compliance practices and procedures
  • Ability to deal with significant ambiguity and simplify issues for senior leaders and colleagues alike and to work innovatively and proactively
  • Proven track record of talent development of professionals
Qualifications
  • JD or equivalent law degree
  • License to practice law in an APAC market (preferred)
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Minimum 15 years PQE
  • Experience working in multinational corporations, ideally with experience in the healthcare industry
  • Broad corporate experience and experience with advising senior leaders of business units
