Job Description


The Sustainability Policy Lead, Asia will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to advance government policies that reduce Microsoft\'s supply chain emissions and increase carbon free electricity supply and infrastructure in key markets in Asia.

This role will require a deep understanding of sustainability policy and regulatory developments in the Asia region (including Australia & New Zealand; Greater China; India; Japan; Korea; and Southeast Asia) and the ability to collaborate with CELA Environment Sustainability and other Microsoft sustainability teams, government affairs teams, and diverse external stakeholders to achieve business and corporate sustainability goals. Other locations will be considered, noting the role will require some travel across Asia as it supports work across the region.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategy to advance government policies that reduce Microsoft\xe2\x80\x99s supply chain emissions and increase carbon free electricity supply and infrastructure in key markets in Asia.
  • Identify and track sustainability policy and regulatory development in key markets in Asia including on carbon disclosure, ESG reporting, carbon reduction, emission controls, electricity grid decarbonization, carbon removal, and circular economy and other related sustainability issues.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and support to Asia CELA and government affairs, engineering and business groups in the review and assessment of relevant carbon, energy and sustainability policies, the analysis of the impacts for Microsoft, and the development of government engagement strategies.
  • Collaborate with CELA Environmental Sustainability and Government Affairs colleagues in corporate headquarters and around the world, to bring insights from Asia policy landscape to the development and execution of Microsoft\'s operational and solutions sustainability strategy and ensure that our internal practices are informed by emerging regulatory trends and developments.
  • Partner with government affairs teams in Asia to guide and support sustainability and energy advocacy efforts, engage with national governments, and work with trade associations and other external organizations to achieve corporate and societal sustainability policy goals.
  • Draft and contribute to formal policy submissions as well as publications, blogs, and whitepapers.
  • Participate in sustainability and energy related industry associations and coalitions, and collaborate with government and corporate affairs teams globally to drive effective engagement.
  • Build and maintain strong, ongoing relationships with external stakeholders in Asia and proactively identify opportunities to collaborate on sustainability policy issues.
  • Represent Microsoft externally on a range of sustainability policy issues and explain complex technical information, including sustainability and electricity sector concepts, products, and services to policy- and business decision-maker audiences.
  • Manage services from external counsel and consultants.
Qualifications:

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Energy Markets, Sustainability, Policy, Law or related field AND 7+ years of experience in sustainability or energy policy, government affairs, or related field.
  • OR 10+ years of experience in sustainability or energy policy, government affairs, or related field.
  • Experience working in or with national governments on environmental and energy issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant experience in a technology organization, corporate, non-profit or governmental agency.
  • Strong understanding of sustainability, energy, supply chain emissions and semiconductor related policy and regulatory developments in the Asia region.
  • Strong project management skills and a track record of coalition-building.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment across multiple teams in different geographies and times zones.
  • Ability to explain complex technical information to policy- and business decision-maker audiences.
  • Experience managing outside resources, including consultants, on legislative or public policy-related initiatives.
