Position Summary
Director - Business Development, MDO is responsible for facilitating, directing, and coordinating sales activities, developing, and managing strategic relationships with key partners, and driving sales operational activities to meet business objectives and sales targets. This includes developing sophisticated and effective proposals, managing a robust pipeline, cultivating relationships, partnering with corporate marketing for effective branding and effectively communicating the value of MDO’s products and services to key partners and healthcare providers. This position will be expected to build long term, recurring revenue engagements with our customers in the applicable regions.
Key Responsibilities


  • Define and develop the strategic plans to drive profitable revenue growth for the MDO business unit.

  • Oversee the continuous development of the MDO sales organization in the applicable regions – focused on sales and revenue as well as people and processes.

  • Contribute to the successful execution of the MDO sales plan.

  • Plan and direct all aspects of the MDO sales strategies, objectives, and initiatives for the applicable regions.

  • Achieve budgeted revenue and profit margin for the MDO business while operating within company policies/procedures and assigned expense budgets.

  • Develop strategic marketing plans

  • Manage the Geo sales organization to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives and provide the infrastructure necessary to support growth.

  • Continuously evaluate and adjust marketing strategies and promotional programs to meet changing market and competitive conditions, including analysis of competitive products and market research.

  • Ensure that market intelligence is received and analyzed to identify new product and service opportunities and to minimize the effects of competitive activity.

  • Ensure that the products and services are marketed in accordance with profit objectives.

  • Ensure that sales management team and internal management are up to date on industry, competitor and product knowledge and changes.

  • Maintain awareness of broad industry trends and their impact on the overall business objective.

  • Function as a member of the leadership team in developing and monitoring product development strategies, forecasts, and schedules for new product introduction.

  • Partner with Sales, Operations, RA/QA, and other associated departments to achieve budgeted revenue and gross margin, while operating within Company policies/ procedures and assigned expense budgets.

  • Partner closely with other senior functional executives (e.g., Marketing, Sales, Operations, RA, Quality, HR, Finance, etc.) to form a strong, mutually supportive, and effective business team.

  • Provide a productive and motivating work environment within the organization.

  • Provide strong leadership, mentoring, coaching and development to direct reports.

  • Determine appropriate performance ratings, salary adjustments, promotions, and separations in consultation with Human Resources.

  • Ensure education and training programs meet employee development needs and customer needs to enhance knowledge of the products and grow the business.

  • Recommend budget requirements for the department and take action to guarantee effective business performance within approved operating budget guidelines.

  • Maintain customer and KOL relationships and contribute to company presence at conventions, annual meetings, trade associations, and seminars.

  • Involvement in other special activities and responsibilities from time-to-time, as directed.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred

  • 15 plus years of related experience; 5 years management experience.

  • Ability, competence, and confidence to lead people

  • Effective interpersonal skills

  • Required Certifications and Training

  • Obtains and completes LMS training plan specific to assigned responsibility.

Varian is required to comply with all local and applicable regulations that may be associated with vaccine requirements for certain roles.
