The Residential Life Officer (RLO) will provide individual support for students in one of the residential colleges (RC) and help implement a residential curriculum.
This role will require the individual to live on campus.
Student Care
  • Serve as an member of the College student care matrix
  • Provide support to students, coaching them through challenging situations and ensuring that they receive appropriate resources
  • Serve as a case manager on assigned student care cases. Report to and coordinate with the Asst. Dean of Students and maintain student confidentiality
  • Live on campus and be a visible presence in the community and get to know students in your RC

Residential Education
  • Serve in College-wide efforts to develop and implement a residential education curriculum
  • Collaborate with the central Dean of Students (DOS) Office and other RC staff to design effective educational initiatives with clear learning objectives and assessment metrics
  • Promote a positive residential environment
  • Participate regularly in Rector, Assistant Dean, and Resident Fellow-led College programming and provide support to programming efforts

Supervision
  • Supervise student staff (RC Advisors and Student Associates), working on student care and Residential Education programming
  • Conduct weekly or bi-weekly meetings with student staff
  • Provide formal and informal evaluation and feedback regarding performance and expectations
  • Oversee and review student staff performance on student care and the residential curriculum development model
  • Assist with the recruitment, selection and training of student staff

Crisis Management and Student Discipline
  • Participate in rotating duty coverage and emergency response, including shared responsibility for holiday, break, and summer coverage
  • Provide leadership during crises and serve on the College crisis team
  • Receive regular first aid and first-responder training and implement as necessary
  • Be knowledgeable of the Code of Student Conduct, Sexual Misconduct Policy, housing regulations, and academic integrity policies; educate students about behavior, document incidents when they arise, mentor and support affected students
  • Adjudicate low-level conduct cases for students in your RC

Administration
  • Attend and participate in weekly RC administration meetings
  • Work collaboratively with DOS Office on housing operation matters
  • Participate in fire drills each semester
  • Serve on department-wide committees and/or work on a consultative or project-basis with DOS units to enhance synergy with the RC
  • Maintain records and meet regularly with supervisor to provide check-ins, coordinate efforts, and discuss professional development
  • Seek regular training and professional development in consultation with the supervisor and in line with DOS strategic plan and priorities

Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree required (M.A. preferred, in an area related to student development, higher education administration, social work, counseling or similar.)
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a student care or residential life role as student or professional staff.
  • Experience in community building, social work/case management of students in an academic setting, para-counselling of young adults, or willingness to receive training in these areas.
  • Experience supervising student or professional staff
  • Ability to connect well with all kinds of students, inspire confidence and provide strong mentorship and support.
  • Familiarity with residential life in a collegiate setting, undergraduate liberal arts education.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and comfortable with multi-national, multi-ethnic, and other forms of diversity.
  • Basic familiarity with student development and needs, including managing anxiety and stress, self-awareness, academic performance balanced with a growth mindset, specific issues associated with the milestones of each cohort level, etc.
  • Experience with managing disputes, mediation, conflict resolution, and educating students who may have violated rules or regulations.
  • Team player who collaborates and communicates effectively with others, takes responsibility for individual tasks and assignments, while working to ensure the approach and tone are aligned with the institution and other colleagues.
  • Selected candidates will be required to undergo periodic first-aid and crisis management training.
  • Approaches work with flexibility and a generosity of spirit.
  • Willingness to work nights and evenings, as needed, especially when on duty.
  • Experience in crisis management.
